Healthy Heart Testimony

Healthy Heart Testimony
By Rusty Ost

I would like to address a situation that was brought about by my open-heart surgery. When I first became involved with Shaklee, it always amazed me when someone who used Shaklee food supplements suffered from some acute or degenerative disease. If Shaklee food supplements were so powerful, why hadn’t the victim been protected? Now that I’ve had open-heart surgery, I’ve heard people (even friends) say, “I thought you were taking all those vitamins so you would stay healthy. What happened?” I’d like to spend the next few minutes telling you exactly “what happened.”

First of all, let me tell you a little about my background. Both my parents died at an early age of heart disease. Neither one of them had a second chance. My cholesterol level has been as high as 480. When I was in college, it was 360 and no one cared! In addition to having the familial history of heart disease, I consumed a very high-fat diet. When June and I were first married and she was finishing Pharmacy school, we would eat a half of beef every six months…just the two of us! Also, during my late teens and early twenties I smoked cigarettes. I gave up cigarettes during my tour of duty in the U S Army in favor of a pipe. I continued smoking a pipe (and an occasional “mooched” cigarette) until I was 40 years of age.

In 1983 we were introduced to Shaklee and we began to study and learn about nutrition and its effect on the body. We began eating low-fat meals and increasing the fiber in our diet. Along with these dietary changes, we began a complete program of Shaklee nutritional supplementation. I watched my cholesterol level drop to an all time low of 180. I have always monitored my blood pressure and presumed that my blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg was well within the normal parameters.

In January of 2000 while in Florida on business and vacation, I awoke one morning with pain in my left arm and slight tightness in my chest. It did go away after a short period, but upon returning to Nebraska, I decided to see a doctor to find out why. He thought my blood pressure was a little high and put me on a very low dose of blood pressure medication. He also determined through blood work that my cholesterol was a little elevated. He did assure me that because of my physical condition and my appearance, he thought a heart attack was out of the question.

We scheduled a complete physical exam because it had been 4 or 5 years since my last exam, and he told me that I might want to consider taking one of the medicines that will lower cholesterol. Two weeks later I had a physical examination and he explained to me that I was in pretty good health. He had run a lot of tests except for an EKG. I asked him about the EKG and he said that because I had one during my sinus surgery a year previously, it probably wasn’t imperative; but that he would do one anyway. After seeing the results of the EKG, he became concerned and said that it looked like I had an “event” and he referred me to a Cardiologist.

I met with the cardiologist the following week and he reviewed my tests. After examining me, he thought that I was in too good of physical shape to have a heart problem. The EKG did have some irregularities and he wanted to do some additional testing. He ordered an echo-cardiogram and a stress test. Less than an hour after the stress test was completed at the hospital, he called me at home to tell me that an angiogram would be necessary because the tests showed that part of my heart was dead! I indeed had suffered an “event”…a heart attack at some time.

The angiogram only confirmed the worst. I had several blockages in my coronary arteries and open-heart surgery was indicated…as soon as possible. I had the surgery. The surgeon performed a quadruple bypass. The four major coronary arteries were blocked at 100%, 99%, 97% and 93%. He says that I am the luckiest man alive and that I should have dropped dead from a heart attack long before now. When I explained my diet and my program of supplementation with soy protein, essential fatty acids and others; he told me that without those changes to my lifestyle, I probably would not be alive today. He said that the supplements had added 15 years to my life.

Without them, I would have needed the surgery 15 years ago and the prognosis would not have been as good. While recuperating in the hospital, the lady who administered the stress test came to visit me. She just wanted to look at me because she claims that with the very little blood flow to my heart, I should have died on the treadmill! My cardiologist then explained to me that if I returned to work, he would give me just two years to live! Thanks for Shaklee and the choice we had that allowed me to never return to my job again.

To all of you who wonder why someone who takes Shaklee supplements still can have health problems, I hope this somewhat answers your question. Without them, this wouldn’t be a very happy place for Rusty and June Ost.

If they can do this much for someone like me, what can they do when someone begins in better health than I did? I think about how much better off I would have been if I had begun Shaklee supplementation at the age of 30 instead of 40…or maybe even 20 years of age? Could I possibly have prevented all of this from happening to me?

Seven years later in 2007, my cardiologist ordered a follow-up echo cardiogram and stress test to see my current state of heart health. The results were phenomenal. The echo cardiogram showed that my heart had recovered and 100% of heart tissue was alive and healthy. The stress test indicated that I had sufficient blood flow throughout my entire heart. My heart pumping efficiency was normal! I attribute this to my diet and to my program of nutritional supplementation.

Daily I consume Shaklee Soy Protein, a Vitalizer strip, OmegaGuard, CoQHeart, Garlic and a few others.

In 2009, my physician once again ordered the tests. And, once again the tests showed that my heart had totally recovered and my heart health was good. My heart pumping efficiency has actually increased to better than normal. In addition to the supplements I began taking Vivix Anti-Aging Tonic a year earlier and I attribute my continued improvement to that. I seem to be the perfect example of someone who is not just getting older, but actually getting better!

For your own sake and the sake of your family, examine the risk factors, try to lead a healthy lifestyle and take Shaklee food supplements.

Besse Cooper Turns 116 and Her Advice for Longevity

Mrs. Cooper has a secret to achieving 116 years of life.

"I mind my own business," she told the Guinness World Records. "And I don't eat junk food."
LOL! Now that's good advice!

Dream Call Tonight- Cinch Weight Loss Winner

Edgar Ortiz                                           Edgar Before

Those of you who have been following the Cinch Weight Loss Finalists will be happy to know that the winner of the Cinch Transformation Challenge was Edgar Ortiz! And you can hear how Edgar lost over 200 pounds and won the $10,000 in tonight's Dream Call!

In our Dream Call tonight, hear how Edgar did it and be encouraged to know you can do it, too!

See below for call times and numbers. Don't worry if you miss a call, it is archived for listening to later, just let me know if you missed it and I can send you the link once the archive is posted.

It was one of the most exuberant and celebratory moments of our Global Conference in Las Vegas - the moment when Edgar Ortiz was voted the winner of the $10,000 Grand Prize in the Cinch Transformation Story contest that began in May 2012!

Twenty-four year old Edgar Ortiz began gaining weight as a kid when he traded outdoor activities for a developing interest in computers and an increasily sedentary lifestyle.  Says Edgar, "self-destructive eating habits were leading me down the road to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and certainly an early death."  Even straight talk from his physician couldn't seem to dissuade Edgar from persisting in unhealthy behavior that led him to weigh in at over 400 pounds.

Edgar's life began to change in 2009 when his friend, Shaklee Distributor and Certified Personal Trainer Ruben Cervantes, intervened, offering to partner with him in creating a transformation.  Together, Edgar and Ruben started off on a journey that helped Edgar to ultimately become 201 pounds* healthier, and now $10,000 wealthier!

Join this week's Dream Call and hear Edgar tell his inspiring story firsthand, interviewed by Justin Rose, Vice President of Regional Sales.  And then let Edgar's story inspire youto commit to your own transformation, and invite three others to join you.  And be sure to enter the Transformation Challenge by September 30 -  you could be the next to win $10,000!

* Results not typical. In a preliminary study of the Cinch Inch Loss Plan, participants on average lost 15.4 pounds in 12 weeks.

Dream Call feature Edgar Ortiz -  Don't worry if you miss a call, it is archived for listening to later, just let me know if you missed it and I can send you the link once the archive is posted.

August Shaklee Newsletter

Ah August. The sun is shining, the grass is burning, the flowers are blooming (or wilting) and we all feel the winds of change off in the distance.

It will be back to school time in just a matter of a few days for many students and some are already back.

I can hear the collective moaning from kids and the rhythm of the happy dance the parents are doing all at the same time.

August is a month that reminds us it’s still summer time and also that bedtimes need to be reset as school schedules loom in the near future.

So we have compiled a short list of helpful tips to combine the two lifestyles as we enjoy the last month of summer.

Our favorite two tips are:

1.    Do little things to improve your health like cut back on pop and keep yourself hydrated.
2.    Take time to enjoy this time with your family. Like summer, life is short. Be sure to enjoy it while it lasts.

~ For Surviving the Heat, Remember These Tips

Reduce Sun Exposure During Peak Hours

UV rays are the strongest and do the most damage between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so the less time you spend outdoors during these hours, the better. That doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the fun though. Just hit the pool or the beach later in the day when the sun is lower. You will still have plenty of time for fun and you won’t melt as quickly or risk sunburn as easily.

Apply Sunscreen Generously

Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen evenly on all areas of the skin—and don't forget your lips, nose, ears, neck, hands, and tops of feet. Apply at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and remember to re-apply every two hours, especially after swimming. It’s easier to apply the sunscreen before you get dressed, too. This way you will be sure not to miss any areas like under sleeves or under collars.

Keep Hydrated

Dehydration can occur very quickly when we perspire and babies and the elderly are especially vulnerable. Water is the best way to re-hydrate and the optimal amount to drink is ½ oz for every pound of body weight.

The benefits of staying hydrated are:

Weight loss – the more you drink the less you will weigh. It helps our stomachs feel fuller longer and often times when we think we’re hungry we are really just a little dehydrated.

You look younger – the more hydrated you are the more youthful your skin looks. Fine lines, blemishes and dark circles are less noticeable.

You have more energy – when you feel yourself lagging especially in the afternoon, remember to re-hydrate with some water or a good sports drink that isn’t loaded with sugar.

~ Tips for saving money on back to school shopping

Don’t Feel the Need to Buy Everything Right Now

Retailers will prey on you feeling the need to get all your shopping done right now and in their crafty ways have raised prices on fall clothes. They may lure you in with 25¢ notebooks and free glue, but they’re hoping to make it up on the higher prices you’ll pay for clothes. Wait for sales, check out Goodwill and resale shops and try and buy at end of season for the best prices.

Learn to Buy Off the Rack

Your kid may be screaming for those private label jeans, but don’t give in, stay strong. We all know fashion is fickle and what’s in this week will be out before school even starts. So stick with the basics – pants, tops and shoes in color schemes and designs that all complement each other. Try and reuse clothes from last year that still fit combined with just a few newer pieces to mix and match, thereby expanding their wardrobe.

Get the Kids Involved

Sit down with your children and show them the lists you have made for what you need now and in the future. Let them have a say in what they want and have them make up their own lists. Have them write down both what they think they need and what they just want. Then do a little online “window shopping” at some of your favorite stores.

Tally up what your child list says and also tally up what’s on your list. This will give you both a glimpse of what it’s all going to cost. (Just remember though you will be waiting for things to go on sale)

If your child doesn’t already have a summer job to help pay for things, then you can “hire” them yourself. There are plenty of what I call “extra” chores that are always needing done.

I’m not advocating paying them for the normal chores everyone has to do to keep the household running, like doing the dishes, grass cutting and normal cleaning, those things are not for paying.

I’m referring to the extra things we tend to put off due to lack of time. Maybe its weeding the flower garden that’s been overtaken by crabgrass, or cleaning the summer grime from windows and window sills.

It could be vacuuming out the van, washing and yes, even waxing it to help prepare it for winter. How about that fence that needs painting or maybe you have an elderly neighbor that needs help.

There are countless ways you can help your child finance their wants and needs (or what they think they need). Get creative and ask for their input on ways to make a little extra money.

When they have to work for it, your kids may come to find it’s not really worth all that extra effort for those overpriced and often really weird looking clothes. And the lesson we teach our children about working for and finding ways to pay for the things we need will be one of the more important things they learn this year.

Acid Reflux

From about August to mid-November I had been having episodes of acid-reflux. So bad, that I thought I was having a heart attack.

I could not lay down, sit or even walk for about 12 hours. I would sit on the floor hunched over and my chest would still hurt. I would also vomited until I got the dry heaves. Needless to say, this was a horrible experience for me. I had an episode about every week to the day.

Then my upline sales leader, Sandi Chapman, told me to try Optiflora and Stomach Soothing Complex. I started out taking Optiflora three times a day and Stomach Soothing Complex between 3-4 times a day, I also drank about 8 glasses of water a day. I was so scared of having another episode of acid reflux I wanted to do anything I could to make sure that didn't happen.

I now take Optiflora 1-2 times a day and Stomach Soothing Complex 1-2 times a day. I also take Alfalfa tablets twice a day. I am happy to report that it has been two months since I have had an episode. I know that Shaklee is healing me! I truly believe in the quality of Shaklee products!

In response to a question about a six month old baby experiencing acid reflux, this is what Nedra Sahr, clinical nutritionist has to say:

The baby's digestive system is 'under developed'.
We recommend:

  • 1 optiflora pearl crushed- pick out the shards of the covering.
  • Mix 1/8 tsp of the Optiflora powder with the powder from the pearl.
  • Put it on mom's finger and let baby suck it off the finger, then nurse.

Once a day is usually sufficient. Works well for colicky babies, acid reflux, building immunity et al

There are large scale studies that have been done in Wales with infants from birth to 9 months- giving each a dose of friendly probiotics each day. The increase in immunity has been impressive.

10 Tips for a Healthy Vacation

With summer's end coming up fast, some of us will be trying to cram in a last minute vacation. So here are a few tips from Shaklee's Director of Medical Affairs and Health Sciences, Pamela Riggs.

By: Pamela Riggs

I’ll be the first to say I love summer!
The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and it’s the time of year when we all deserve a nice, long vacation!

Whether you’re planning a trip to some far-away, exotic location or simply planning a “stay-cation” this year, vacation travel may make you a little uneasy and stressed about maintaining healthful eating and exercise habits.

If you’re trying to lose weight, eating on the road also can sabotage your efforts.

To help you have a healthy—yet relaxing—summer vacation, here are my top 10 health and wellness tips:

1.   Think ahead. Do your homework. Use the Internet to find healthful food options in the town(s) you plan to visit. Many restaurants have their menu available online for you to review in advance.

2.   Make smart food choices. Order half portions, share an entrĂ©e with your travel partner, and don’t be afraid to make special requests.

3.   Limit alcohol. You’ve pictured it for weeks: you on a tropical island with a mai tai in hand. Although moderate alcohol consumption has been linked to certain health benefits, alcohol tends to increase your appetite and provides extra calories and few or no nutrients.

4.   Walk it off. Rest and relaxation are important parts of any vacation, but staying active is a great way to manage your weight and boost your energy level. Pack a pedometer and be sure to sight-see on foot whenever possible. Better yet, plan an “active vacation” or walking tour of your destination.

5.   Pay attention to hunger and satiety signals. Try to avoid the “I’m on vacation!” mind-set. Eat because your body is truly hungry, and stop eating at the first signs of satiety.

6.   Make water your best friend. Traveling can dehydrate you. Especially if your plans require long plane rides or spending time in the sun or at the beach. If you can, be sure to stock your hotel room, backpack, or car with plenty of water.

7.   Order special meals. If available, make a special request of the airline before you travel to have a vegetarian or low-fat meal, which will likely have fewer calories and be your healthiest option.

8.   Get five a day. Make an effort to get your five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. High in fiber, good for your digestion, and packed with immune-supporting vitamins and minerals. The perfect way to make meals more nutritious and filling.

9.   Pack exercise clothes. A T-shirt, some yoga pants, and/or gym shorts won’t take up too much space. And at the very least, remember to pack a good pair of walking shoes.

10. Enjoy the scenery. You’re on vacation, so remember to focus your attention on the scenery around you instead of the food. Enjoy learning all about the new places you’re visiting, connecting with the locals, and spending quality time with your family or friends.

By Anthea Tripp

My Mom will be 90 years old in November. She and my Dad have been using Shaklee products for more than 25 years. They don’t take a lot, but they have been consistent with what they do take – Vita Lea, OsteoMatrix, Vitamin E and Vitamin C, sometimes Nutriferon.
As with many elderly, my Mom started showing signs of short term memory loss 4-5 years ago – very slow progression, but nevertheless real – along with a general slowing down mentally and physically. She basically just wanted to sit around, take multiple naps during the day, and didn’t seem to be motivated to get involved in daily activities, especially cooking ( I think she got confused where things were in the kitchen).
Last Fall, I took them a month supply of Vivix and they began taking it right away. Toward the end of my stay – two weeks – I was in the kitchen starting dinner when my Mom came in and picked up a potato peeler and began helping me. That may not sound like much, but really it was huge – that hadn’t happened in a long time.
Over the last year, after taking it and not taking it, I now send it to them in England regularly and not only does my Mom LOVE Vivix, but my Dad (who is never easy to convince of anything) is a firm believer that Vivix is making a noticeable difference.
My Mom is so much more involved and engaged in all around her, including helping my Dad with the cooking. She even will initiate activities herself now. This is a huge improvement and I can tell the difference in her when we speak on the phone. I return in September for another visit and am excited to see even further improvement.
