The Scary Prescription Drug Commercials


There you are, sitting on your couch after a hard day and all you want to do is relax. You have finally decided to take your health issues seriously and you have been working hard to eat healthier, exercise and just live a healthier lifestyle. Your doctor wants you to try this new prescription medicine that just came out and you have been mulling it over.

Then, all of a sudden these happy looking people about your age come on the TV. They are frolicking in the grass, fishing with their buddies, shopping with their friends, driving cool old cars and playing football with their grandkids. The narrator comes on and starts talking about the horrible health condition this person has just come through, but now has a new lease on life because of this new miracle drug. They apparently have gone from their death bed to now competing in a marathon within a two week span.

The commercial intrigues you because you may be facing a similar health condition. Your doctor is pushing you to try this new drug out and everyone connected is giving you the impression that your life will suddenly be just like the people you see in the commercial. 

Funny, isn’t that what cigarette commercials did years ago and what alcohol commercials do now? "Use our product and your life will be like this!"

As you watch the commercial the long list of side effects comes on. “This medication has been shown to cause blindness, seizures, heart attacks, stroke, kidney failure, liver failure, tuberculosis, cancer and…even death! See your doctor for advice to see if this medication is right for you.”

Um, no thank you!

Now, I am not saying we should all avoid prescription medicine, nor should you turn your back on the advice your doctor gives you. Many terrible diseases have been cured and even prevented with truly miracle drugs and vaccines. I also support continued research into developing cures and disease preventing vaccines.

I am however, against drug companies being allowed to advertise prescription medicine and make it all sound like a miracle cure. Yes, the FDA makes them put their risks found in studies in the ad, but they try and hide the bad sides and play up the good. They do their best to appeal to your emotional side with pretty pictures and illusions of miraculous comebacks from the brink of death.

Don’t fall for it.

Pharmaceutical companies are banking on Americans not taking care of themselves and their main interest isn’t you, but their profits. They pay big money to lobby against prevention and wellness programs as well as wellness companies designed to keep people healthy and prevent disease, because that means fewer people will need their drugs.

These drug companies use their money to pressure the federal government to regulate health and wellness industries so much that they can’t even hardly say that you should try and be healthy because they don’t want you to be healthy, they want you to be sick! All the while they are allowed to go on to making wild claims about what their drug can do with very little regulation.

The drug companies are this era’s mafia, this country’s drug cartel and they seem to be far more dangerous to the general public because they are allowed to come into our lives, into our living rooms with smiling, healthy actors and with all the blessings of our government.

How many times have you heard where a miracle drug was promoted to be the next cure all only to find out a years or even years later that the drug itself caused more health problems and more deaths than the disease it was supposedly invented to cure?

Are you willing to be the drug companies’ guinea pig?

These drug companies are also dipping their hands into our daily food. Monsanto is the drug giant strong arming the U.S. government into allowing them to infuse GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organism) into our food supply. They want to use these modified organisms, yes I said organisms, as way to increase profits.

These organisms have been shown over and over again to cause serious health effects, and our food supply is becoming contaminated with the organisms to the point that once an original, uncontaminated field has had a seed blown over from one of these genetically altered fields, that unaltered original field is now “contaminated” and it can also be forcefully taken from the farmer as a product now owned by Monsanto. Isn't that stealing?

They are taking over more and more farms, by force if necessary to push out the non contaminated crops and grow only Monsanto crops. The farmers can’t even control their own farms anymore for if they try and take back their crops and not comply with the “rules” set up by Monsanto, then the company has the government step in and make them comply or risk financial ruin and even loss of their farm.

Scared yet? You should be and I am, too.

Fight back against big government and big drug companies who clearly don’t have your best interests at heart. They want your money and they will get it any way they possibly can. Don’t give it to them!

Eat right, exercise and take your supplements because you are going to need them as finding good, unaltered food is becoming harder. Choose a doctor that is willing to work with you in the healthiest way possible. If you have a doctor always quick to write a prescription drug without seriously working on natural ways to help your body heal, then find another doctor who is.

Don’t turn your back on the latest science or your doctor's advice, but don’t turn your back on natural healing either. Find the balance.

You are responsible for your health, not your doctor, not the pharmaceutical companies, not the government. Your best defense is to be healthy. Take steps now to learn ways to get healthier and teach your children the benefits of good health and the dangers of poor health.

Hang in there and fight till we get a government willing to take our health and wellbeing seriously enough to stand up to these bullying drug companies and take positive action. We need the government to take prevention more seriously and have it be come more of a priority. 

And when it comes time to vote, press your favorite candidates on the issues of health, wellness, prevention, drug companies and food tampering to see if they are even aware of these problems and where they stand. They are going to need strong backbones, make sure you choose wisely.

The Latest Fish Oil Study and Cancer Risk – Is it True?

My phone has been ringing off the hook. My email in-box is full. It seems that everyone wants to know if the headlines about omega-3 fatty acids and prostate cancer are true.

In case you have just gotten back from a vacation on some deserted island with no newspapers and no internet, let me bring you up to date. The headlines
are saying things like "Fish Oils May Increase Your Risk of Prostate Cancer" and "Latest Study Links Fish Oils to Prostate Cancer".

Once again, it seems like just when you've figured out which foods that are good for you, someone tells you they could actually kill you. It's no wonder so many of you have been asking me to cut through the hype and put this latest study in perspective.

As usual, let me start with the study itself (Brasky etal., Journal of the National Cancer Institute, doi:10.1093/jnci/djt174). On the surface, it appears to be a reasonably well designed study, and the conclusions were dramatic. They reported that subjects with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood were 43% more likely to develop prostate cancer, 44% more likely to develop low grade prostate cancer, and 71% more likely to develop high grade prostate cancer compared to those with low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood.

Case closed you might be tempted to say. However, once you dig a little deeper, the study does have two important weaknesses.

1) It used data from another study that was designed for a totally different purpose. They went back and analyzed blood samples from a previous study that was actually designed to measure the association between vitamin E and selenium intake and prostate cancer. That's a scientific no-no.  Let me explain why.

If they had designed a study to investigate the association between omega-3 fatty acids and prostate cancer, they probably would have selected participants with a wide range of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood at the beginning of the study. The subjects in this study actually had a very narrow range of omega-3 fatty acids in their bloodstream.

They also would probably have done a diet analysis and found out whether the subject's omega-3 fatty acids were coming from fish or fish oil supplements. They might have even asked whether the omega-3 fatty acids were from farm-raised fish or inexpensive fish oil supplements known to be contaminated with PCBs. This study collected none of these data.

2) This is a single study, and individual studies often provide misleading results. For example, if you examine their data closely, it looks like heavy drinkers and smokers might have a decreased risk of prostate cancer. I think that's unlikely, but weird associations like that often pop up in individual studies.

That's why expert scientists aren't swayed by individual studies. We prefer to look at the "big picture" that emerges when you combine the results of many studies.

For example, a meta-analysis of 24 studies with 461,402 subjects (Symanski et al, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 92: 1223-1233, 2010) found no association between fish consumption and prostate cancer risk.

Individual studies ranged from a 61% decrease in risk to a 77% increase in risk, but the overall effect was zero! Even more importantly, fish consumption decreased
prostate cancer deaths by 63%.

So what is the bottom line for you?

1) Don't panic. Don't change what you are doing based on the latest sensational headlines. This study has been way overblown. We have come to expect sensational headlines and hype from journalists and bloggers because that's how they get people to read what they write.

However, I find the comment from the senior author that "We've shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful" to be very irresponsible, especially since they have no data showing that anyone in their study actually used fish oil supplements.

2) The authors make a big deal out of the fact that this study replicates the results they obtained in a previous study (Brasky et al, British American Journal of Epidemiology, 173: 1429-1439, 2011). However, they neglect to mention that 4 previous studies showed decreased risk, and the totality of all published studies shows no effect of fish or fish oil on prostate cancer risk (Symanski et al, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 92: 1223-1233, 2010).

3) The benefits of assuring optimal omega-3 fatty acid intake clearly overshadow the risks. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lower triglycerides and blood pressure, reduce inflammation and depression, and may even help prevent dementia.

4) This study does raise a caution flag, but I would not recommend reducing your omega-3 fatty acid intake on the basis of these data alone - especially since most published studies show no increased risk of prostate cancer. There are much better designed studies underway that should clearly show an increase in prostate cancer risk if it is a real effect. 

I will monitor those studies closely and keep you abreast of any new developments.

About the Author:
Dr. Chaney has a BS in Chemistry from Duke University and a PhD in biochemistry from UCLA. He currently holds the rank of Professor at a major university where runs an active cancer research program and has published over 100 scientific articles and reviews in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

There you have it. Dr. Chaney is well known for his very informative and well studied information. He is highly respected in his field and I trust his opinion. Countless amounts of people have shown to have greatly benefited from taking Omega-3 fatty acids and to come out with an obvious flawed study saying they are harmful is extremely irresponsible and very damaging. Shame on them for trying to grab their 15 minutes of fame at the expense of people’s health!

The media is famous for hyping up any story they think will grab headlines and do no research into whether or not it is true. Be very careful and scrutinize everything you read, especially on the Internet. There is a lot of mis-information out there and it is up to the individual to do their homework. Don't get "hooked" by the hype.

Weight Loss Strategy: The National Institute of Health's Food Journal Project




If you think that taking the time to write down what you eat each day is cumbersome, boring and too hard to do, then you may want to read this:

The National Institute of Health (NIH) assembled a group of 1600 obese people and asked them to write down everything they ate at least 1 day per week.

Slowly, people began recording meals once a week and sometimes more often. Some even started a daily food log and it soon became a habit.

The regular food log group soon found themselves looking at their entries and began finding patterns. The 10AM snackers began keeping apples and bananas at their desk and slowly began replacing junk food with healthy food in all their meals.

The researchers hadn't suggested any of these behaviors but the simple act of food journaling led to folks who kept daily food journals lose twice as much weight as anyone else. 

This week, let's create a food journal for our own heath.

Tips if Your Windows Streak After Cleaning


Shaklee's Basic-H² is one of the most awesome window cleaners!

However, if your windows have a film on them or you have been cleaning them with chemicals for years, there may be a residue buildup that has to be removed first.

I usually tell people that it is going to take 1-2 times of them cleaning with 
Shaklee's Basic-H² window cleaner. Years of chemical use leaves behind terrible residue. Usually the first couple of times you clean with Shaklee's Basic-H²  it streaks because it is cleaning the chemical residue. After removing the residue, you will notice that it cleans amazingly well and actually squeaks when you clean.

Shaklee offers a special blue window cleaning cloth, the Super Microfiber Window Cloth
 that makes the process go even easier, but it isn't required. Microfiber cloths are also great to use. 

Note: Never use fabric softener on any microfiber cloths or any cloth you clean windows with. The residue can be transferred to the glass when cleaning, causing streaking.

Remember, 2 drops to a 16 oz spray bottle! That's it, any more and streaking could occur! Try using a toothpick to dip into a bottle of 
Shaklee's Basic-H² to add the 2 drops into the water in the spray bottle.
