Weight Mgt. Education – Supermarket Survival - Shopping at the market while you're trying to manage your weight doesn't have to be expensive or complicated, if you have a plan of attack. Here's Dr. Jamie McManus with some great advice:

Safer Sunscreen – I love Shaklee’s sunscreen and here’s why. It is designed for all skin types, including the most sensitive skin, I have used this on my son since he was a baby. It is water resistant and oil-free so it isn’t sticky and won’t leave an oil slick in your pool. It contains antioxidant vitamins and botanicals and offers broad spectrum protection. It is hypoallergenic, alcohol free, dye free, oil free, and paraben free.

Some may say, “Well, it’s only SPF 30. I want 100% SPF”. The FDA, doctors, scientists, and other health experts have long said that SPF’s over 30% do not protect any better than 30% SPF ones. The SPF rating is misleading. You would think 100% is better than 30%, but it doesn’t work that way. Once you get over 30%, the protection stays the same. It’s not like you get protected better or longer. Often people assume 100% SPF means they can stay in the sun longer, but it doesn’t mean that. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn and high SPF sunscreens actually offer less UVA protection, the really damaging rays, which can lead to lower immune systems and more skin cancer. Plus the higher the rating, the more chemicals used and that can mean more sensitivities to the sunscreen itself.

So you are better off with a SPF of 30% and apply as recommended.

Smoothie Recipe: Raspberry Lime Cooler – Now this tastes like summer!

Joint Health Tips to Help Prevent Injury

Summer is a great time to get active. But as we age, our bodies lose the ability to renew and maintain the supportive cartilage structures surrounding joints and bones.

For the millions of people who have joint discomfort, even simple activities can be a challenge.

We often start out with good intentions to get in better shape only to be sidelined with joint pain.

Often times we start a program without taking the time to protect our joints.

It can be very discouraging to finally get the motivation to start working out, set a goal to increase your workout intensity or train to enter a mini marathon, only to end up on the couch with an ice bag, waiting to hear back from the orthopedic doctor.

What can we do to get in shape or train for an event without getting sidelined with joint pain?

The key is prevention. It is much easier to prevent an injury than to treat one. So here are a few tips to help protect your joints as you become more active:

Lose the Extra Weight:
Yes, that’s the whole reason you are wanting to be more active, to lose weight and get in shape, but if you are overweight to begin with, your joints are already screaming at you due to being over-stressed.

If you are out of shape and overweight, I always recommend walking as the first weight loss activity to start with and then slowly add weights, starting off light and gradually, over time add extra weight and reps. Strong muscles and tendons help protect joints. Once your body gets used to the movement of walking and light weight lifting then you can add in other exercises and activities without the danger of injuring yourself as easily.

Warm Up:
It’s a good idea to warm up for 5-10 minutes at a slow to moderate pace and ease into your activity. Muscles and joints that are cold are more apt to be injured under the stress of movement.

Stretch:
Now that everything is warmed up, take a few minutes to stretch. Light stretches done after warm up helps prevent injuries and elastic muscles help to protect joints better. Also remember to stretch after your activity to help prevent tight muscles and soreness.

Know Your Limits:
Some exercises are too hard on joints, especially if you have already suffered an injury. Know what is proper form for the exercise you are doing and modify it to your ability to do it safely. There is no shame in not bending, stretching or going the speed as the others are. Some people just cannot do what others can and that’s OK! The idea is get stronger without injuring yourself. Work at the pace that is comfortable for you.

Ice Can Be Your Friend:
With sore joints adding ice for 20 minutes can do a world of good for pain and swelling. Soaking in epsom salts is also very beneficial for soreness. See your doctor if swelling does not improve after ice therapy.

Eat Right to Nourish Your Joints:
Eating a healthy diet is good for your joints, because it helps build strong bones and muscles. For your bones, make sure you get enough calcium every day. You can do this by eating foods such as milk, yogurt, broccoli, kale, figs, and fortified foods like soy or almond milk. (Does ice cream count? - I sure hope so!)

It is nearly impossible to get enough calcium from diet alone so a good calcium supplement is crucial to good bone health. This is the one I recommend and unlike many store brands that just sit there like a rock, this one is easily broken down and assimilated by the body: OsteoMatrix.
Protein & Vitamin D are also important for good bone health so you may want to seriously consider supplementing them as well.

If you follow these simple tips to protecting your joints, then you will be well on your way to living a healthier, and pain free life!

Hear from Andrea whose husband suffered with terrible shoulder pain:

“The doctor said he had a problem with what’s called the rotator cuff, and surgery would inevitably have to follow. Well, after a little over one week with the Joint Health Complex, my husband comes home from work with a great, big grin.  He says, ‘It’s almost too good to be true.  I don’t even want to say it, but I have almost no pain at all!’  The great thing about this, in addition to not having pain, is that he can move his arm around, all he wants, and has full motion.”
