What Do Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure & Diabetes Have In Common?

What do these major health issues have in common?

They all can come from a lack of sleep.

While talking about sleep may sound boring – enough to put you to sleep - getting enough of it is crucial to good health.

When someone tells me, “All I need is 4-5 hours and I’m good” I’m not impressed. In fact it annoys me, because they think I should be impressed with how late they stay up and still do a day’s work.

I don’t think they’re cool; I think they’re acting stupid, maybe because of a lack of sleep.

Here’s what happens when you don’t get enough sleep:

Lose Your Sex Drive – I thought this first one would get your attention fast.
Sleep specialists report that those who aren’t getting the recommended hours of restful sleep a night say they have a lower libido and men show a drop in testosterone. So before reaching for some testosterone building pills, maybe you could use more hours snoozing in bed.

Health Problems Start or Get Worse – Not enough sleep increases your chances for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.
Researchers found that those who reported less than the recommended hours of sleep had more of these health problems.
The body repairs itself and regenerates while sleeping. Plus, when we don’t get enough rest and we force our bodies to function anyway, we put undo stress upon it. This can lead to poor eating habits, lack of proper exercise, etc., which all can lead to poor health.

You Get Stupid – Lack of sleep really makes you dumb. I don’t say that to be mean, it’s true.
Sleep plays a critical role in thinking, learning and retaining what you learn. You can’t concentrate, problem solve or reason effectively without sleep. Also, since sleep allows time for our brains to categorize our thoughts and experiences, if you don’t get enough sleep you won’t be able to remember what you learned or experienced.

You Have Accidents – Sleepy drivers on the road are a leading cause of automobile accidents.
When you are sleep deprived your reactions to an emergency situation unfolding in split seconds on the highway are about as slow as a person who is drunk.
Lack of sleep is also responsible for many job related accidents. Many workers when being honest admitted they screwed up or got hurt because they just were so tired and weren’t thinking clearly.

You Get Fat – When you don’t sleep enough you tend to overeat and not exercise. We touched on this above, but research backs it up.
Studies show that when you lack getting the recommended amount of sleep you are 30% more likely to become obese.
Think about it, don’t you reach for the junk food when you’re tired and cranky?

You Look Older – Getting your “beauty sleep” isn’t just a saying, it’s true.
If you don’t get enough sleep your skin, especially on your face tells the world.
Lack of sleep is stressful to the body producing the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol breaks down collagen and collagen helps give skin its elasticity.
Your slumped over, dragging body that’s exhausted also makes you look older.

Depression Creeps In – When you constantly short change yourself on sleep you can get depressed. If you are already battling depression, a lack of sleep can make it much worse. Taking care of yourself is important to beating stress and making sure you are getting enough sleep will help your mood tremendously.

So don’t try and impress me with your attitude of I don’t need sleep, because I’m not buying it.

It also makes me very upset when I see children not getting enough sleep on a regular basis.
Children’s brains and bodies are growing so fast, their sleep is so very important to their development.
Instilling good sleeping habits is very important and crucial to children’s health.

So how much sleep is enough?

For the average adult it is 8-9 hours. That’s sleep hours, not laying in bed hours.

For older adults or those who have serious health issues it is closer to the 10 hour mark. Think about it…if your body is fighting a major health issue it needs more nutrients and more restorative sleep to fight that battle every day.

For children it depends upon their age:

1-4 Weeks Old: 15 - 16 hours per day

1-4 Months Old: 14 - 15 hours per day

4-12 Months Old: 14 - 15 hours per day

1-3 Years Old: 12 - 14 hours per day

Naps play an important role in getting these hours all in. Unfortunately around three years old children tend to not want to nap because they're afraid they might miss something!
That is why early bed times are very important. Instilling these habits now will make it much easier on them as they get older and attend school.

3-6 Years Old: 10 - 12 hours per day

7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day – this is the age where I see many children not getting enough. Make sure they have an early enough bed time based on when they have to get up for school that gives them 10 hours of sleep. Stand firm even when they whine!

12-18 Years Old: 8 - 9 hours per day – though we all know teenagers will sleep much more than that if they can.
Let them sleep as they may need it.
Many teens go through major growth periods at this time and will require much more sleep than normal. Just don’t confuse laziness with needing more sleep. If they are sleeping all day because they are staying up late texting friends, then it’s time to set some limits.

Instilling good sleeping habits now will serve them well and help keep them healthy in the future.

Many people may be saying right now, “Well that sounds good, but I suffer with insomnia. That’s why I’m not getting enough sleep”.

Insomnia affects many people and there are just as many causes. They can range from stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, medications taken to chemical imbalances in the brain.

I urge you to seek out methods to help with insomnia starting with natural methods first.

While medications can help some with short term insomnia, they are not meant to be used long term and I have never met anyone who said it continued to work for them past a certain point.

What was causing the insomnia in the first place just continued and the medications eventually stopped working or worse, they couldn’t get any sleep without them, but the side effects made life unbearable – causing a terrible spiral downwards in their health.

It's important to get to the root of the problem - find out why you are not sleeping before choosing to medicate.

We have worked with individuals and have helped them find more natural ways to get more sleep. For most people it was just a matter of making some lifestyle changes that weren’t too hard.

If you are interested in learning natural ways on how to get a better night’s sleep review the articles below and contact us for a free personal consultation. We may be able to help you find what works for you.

Supplements that help promote restful sleep are:

Passion flower, chamomile & valerian – found in Gentle Sleep Complex

Calcium & Magnesium together – found in Chewable Cal Mag Plus

Certain herbs – found in Stress Relief Complex

However, if you take certain medications you cannot take some herbs. Please contact us to see if these products are safe to take with the medications you are currently taking.

10 Tips To Help Prevent Stress Eating

Does this describe your life?

Work is going through another round of layoffs. The kids are sick and involved in too many activities. Your spouse is driving you crazy. Your mom called and she needs your help this weekend. And on, and on, and on. The stress never ends.

You are often running on fumes, both physically and mentally. So you reach for the food. The carbs, the chocolate, the sugar. The easy and handy stuff that while you’re eating it releases that feel good hormone, but the moment you stop or when the bag is empty, you feel just……awful. Defeated. Ashamed. Angry at yourself and your lack of discipline.

Emotional eating – eating when we are stressed or depressed can sneak up on you. It steals your joy, your energy and your self-esteem.

It creeps in slowly and takes over your health, bite by bite, slowly and steadily until one day those favorite jeans or that beautiful blouse is now not looking so good on you. If you can get into it at all.

If you have ever collapsed on the bed in tears, then I get you. I’ve been there. I know just how you feel. I used to be a big stress eater and I admit, there are times I still do, but I’ve learned to find other things to turn to instead of the bags of chips.

It helps to talk to someone who knows exactly how you feel and who has learned ways to overcome the cycle.

Let me pull you back up on your feet. Here are few tips you can use for when the stress eating monster comes knocking and shaking a bag of cookies in front of you:

1. Don’t Buy It.
If it’s not in the house, you can’t eat it. And don’t use the fact that you have kids as an excuse to buy a bunch of cookies, cakes and crackers. They don’t need it either and you want to teach them healthier eating habits. You don’t want your kids to learn to stress eat, too, do you?

2. Have Healthier Choices Ready.
Sometimes all we need is that “crunch”. Crunchy veggies are free. This means you can eat as many as you like. So make sure you have them washed, cut and ready to grab in small containers, so you can flop down on the couch and crunch away till your stress moment passes. Get some of your favorite dip, just go a bit easy on it.

3. Reevaluate What Is Stressing You Out.
If it’s a person, do they really mean that much to you? Is it someone whose opinion truly matters? Are they just someone who is nasty to everybody and it just happened to be your turn? Stop and think if this person’s opinion is worth your health. Chances are, they aren’t so don’t let them get to you.
If it’s your schedule, then change it. You can’t manage time, but you can manage your schedule. Learn the power of “NO”.

4. Resist The Urge To Complain.
It may be tempting to call that friend or make that negative post on social media yet again about the person that upset you or the work day you had, but try and resist the urge to do so. Don’t dwell on the negative and then put it out there in the universe. Look for and think about the positive. It may take some looking, but the positive is there if you really look for it. It's OK to talk to someone when you really need to get a fresh perspective or to vent occasionally. But, if you are a "habitual complainer", everyone, even your friends are really sick of hearing it.

5. Find What Relaxes You.
Take a walk. Pet the dog. Read a book. Take a bubble bath. Find what you enjoy doing that relaxes you and turn to it at stressful moments. If you’re at work, then get up and walk outside for a few minutes if you can. Tell them you have to get something from your car. Take the stairs and the long way around the building. The walk will calm you down and get you closer to your steps goal for the day.
Can’t do that? Then walk around on the inside at work, taking the stairs, etc. Take a file folder with some papers in it to look more official. Instead of emailing your question to a colleague, go ask them in person. The fact that you are getting up and moving will help curb the craving to reach for food.

6. Use Visualization.
Picture yourself in your happy place. The beach. The mountains. The pool. In the backyard playing with your kids. Where would you go if you could? Go there in your mind. Close your eyes and really picture it. See the colors of the sunset. Smell the fragrant flowers. Hear the kids’ laughter. Really put yourself there.

7. Breathe.
Deep breathing can do wonders to reset your mood. Taking in several deep, slow breaths lowers your heart rate, your blood pressure and it helps to stop the release of cortisol that stress produces. It also helps release more serotonin, the feel good hormone.

8. Exercise.
If you can’t get much exercise in at work or at lunch then make it a priority to get it in at home or at the gym. Actually make an appointment and write it on your daily calendar and make it a priority. When we exercise regularly we can handle stress much more easily as our bodies produce more of the good hormones when we exercise and it releases the toxins that have built up. Being more fit helps our bodies and our brains handle stress better.

9. Take a B-Complex and a Stress Relief Complex:
Shaklee makes two great products to help combat stress. Your body will get depleted of B Vitamins really quickly when you are under stress.
These two products help to relieve stress and help fight cravings. You must take the B vitamins all in the right balance though. Never take just one or too much of one B vitamin as it will throw off the balance of the other B vitamins.
That is why I love Shaklee’s B-Complex. It has all the B Vitamins in the right balance and right ratio.
Shaklee’s Stress Relief Complex is awesome to take at stressful moments. It works fast, does not make you drowsy, but helps you stay alert. You just find that what was bothering you, just doesn’t anymore. Many people say that it works just as well as Valium or Xanax for them, but without the side effects or addictiveness.
So try them out and let me know how well they work for you.
Find them here:

10. One last thing – Forgive yourself when you slip up. There may be times that you just cave and eat the whole sleeve of Girl Scout Cookies. Forgive yourself. Pick yourself up, wipe the cookie crumbs off your shirt and go on. It’s OK, just know we all do it, myself included and you won’t be judged here.

Fatigued? Stressed Out? Craving Chocolate? – Signs You Are Deficient In This Vitamin

If this describes you, then you might be deficient in the family of vitamins called “B Vitamins”

B vitamins are a group of water soluble vitamins that work together as a family. They are needed to convert food into energy. Nerves in the body require B vitamins to send signals. That is why those with MS, fibromyalgia and other nerve related health issues benefit greatly with adding the B vitamin family. They also help prevent birth defects.

When you are under stress, or smoke, or have a serious health condition, the body uses up B vitamins at a very fast rate. When you get depleted, the following symptoms may occur:

Fatigue
Irritability
Nervousness
Anxiety
Mood Changes
Depression
Hair Loss
Muscle Weakness & Pain
Clear urine (urine is supposed to be yellow)

You can get B vitamins in your diet from whole grains, dark green vegetables and some animal products. You need to eat these foods in large amounts every day to get an adequate supply of B vitamins or fill in the gaps with supplementation.

When you supplement you must take all of the B vitamins together as a family and in the right ratios. If you take too much of one B vitamin it throws off the balance of the other B vitamins causing chaos and not receive the benefits.

So never take a B vitamin by itself – always together with its family and in the right ratio.

Don't take a vitamin that loads up on the cheap B vitamins like riboflavin and skimps on the expensive ones like biotin.

You also want to make sure it has enough folic acid in it and that the folic acid is in the coating where it can be easily broken down by the body, something which is hard to do if it’s just inside the tablet.

Why I choose this B-Complex:

This version has a patented bioactivated delivery system.

Dietary folate, a critical B vitamin, isn't easily absorbed, so Shaklee developed a unique folic acid coating that makes the nutrient more accessible to promote absorption. This patented technology is a Shaklee exclusive.

Plus these B vitamins are all there in the right ratios so you are getting the full effect of their benefits.

If you would like to learn more about this B-Complex and see the label, click here: B-Complex

So if you are suffering from any of the above mentioned symptoms consider adding B-Complex to your daily regimen.

Not sure how much to take? Need more info or have questions? Please click the “Contact Us” tab up top and tell us how we can help you. We usually respond within 24 hours.

Be well my friends,

Julie
B-complex testimony:
I have had Fibromyalgia for years. The fatigue and muscle pain/weakness was so debilitating. I could barely function. Add in all the stress of being sick, taking care of a family and losing my job because I couldn't work, my health and quality of life was going downhill fast.
A lady one day who was a friend of a friend, asked me if I had ever given any thought to the role nutrition might play in how I felt. She proceeded to share with me the power of good nutrition and introduced me to Shaklee's B-Complex.
Using her suggestions on nutrition and taking the B-Complex I noticed within a week I was already experiencing a huge improvement in my pain, my energy and my mood!
I had to learn to know how much my body needed and I was grateful for her advice.
I also give B-Complex to my son especially if he is nervous about an upcoming test at school. It helps him focus better.
If you know someone who suffers with fibromyalgia, be sure to share with them my story!

Can The Health Of Your Gut Affect Your Mood?

Many people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, memory loss, addictions, migraines and more, may actually have a health problem in their gut.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is actually called the “Second Brain”.

When we were being formed in our mother’s womb, two brains were formed. One obviously went to our head and the other one went to our gut. They are connected together through the Vagus nerve. This allows both of the brains to communicate.

An example of that would be, when you are experiencing high moments of stress, fear or anxiety you may feel “butterflies” in your stomach, or you may feel queasy, or if it’s a very negative situation you may feel like someone “punched you in the stomach”. We’ve all felt such feelings in our gut during strong emotions.

That is because one of the vital aspects of our digestion system is the production of serotonin – the “feel good” hormone. Most people think it comes from your head, but actually over 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the GI tract. Your gut plays an important role in the production of serotonin and many of the body’s vital functions.

You know it to be true, because when you aren’t “regular” and feeling good in your gut, your whole health is affected.

Many health problems are attributed to a lack of serotonin including depression, anxiety, addictions, and migraines. It also affects digestive disorders, such as IBS, diarrhea, constipation, plus skin conditions and even some auto-immune diseases.

Serotonin is manufactured from the amino acid tryptophan, which is derived from the food we eat. So what we eat can greatly affect our overall health.

Diet influences not only the state of our digestive system and overall physical health, it also has a profound impact on memory, mental clarity, mood and even the foods we crave. These functions are all regulated by hormones including serotonin.

So what can you do?

Many people reach for over the counter medications to help with stomach acid and reflux. When they stop working, they turn to prescription medications from the doctor. They may work temporarily, but they have side effects. The body tries to overcome the medications, making the situation worse. They spiral out of control. Stronger meds are introduced and later the symptoms return. It’s a vicious cycle.

To break this vicious cycle you must heal the gut. You do this through diet. The type of food you eat and don’t eat is so very important.

Certain food groups need to be added – fresh vegetables and lots of them, whole grains, but be careful of seeds and nuts. An unhealthy gut cannot process seeds and nuts and can make situations worse.

Fruits in moderation can be good, but be careful of acidic fruits while the gut is healing. Dairy also may need to be avoided. You will want to make sure you are taking a good calcium supplement to make up for it.

Lean protein, preferably a vegetable sourced protein like soy is best. You want to avoid heavy meats like beef. The stomach and intestines have to work extra hard to break down beef and if it’s sick, it won’t do so efficiently.

Since you will be cutting back on animal protein, you must make up for the lack of protein by adding it back in through a vegetable sourced protein. You must have an adequate supply of protein to build a healthy body.

Probiotics are definitely a must and lots of them. A good, but healthy cleanse is needed, but do not do harsh cleanses and you should always do them with the guidance of a knowledgeable health guide. If you are on medications for other health problems, consult with your doctor first and monitor your health during a cleanse to adjust medications accordingly.

There are some other supplements that have been shown to greatly help heal the gut, but everyone is an individual. It is best to talk with someone who can ask the right questions to determine the best course of action based on your individual needs.

Would you like to talk with us to learn more about having a healthy gut?

Please make an appointment with us to discuss your specific situation. To do this, you can click the “Contact Us” tab up top and fill out the short form and submit it. We will then contact you to set up a time to talk.

When you make an appointment with us we can also share with you a wonderful webinar that we did on Natural Approaches to Reflux, IBS, and Leaky Gut - Healing the Digestive System Naturally.

This webinar that is only 30 minutes long does a wonderful job of explaining how healing the gut can help your health, both physical and mental. It also goes into more detail about diet and supplements. This is available free when you make an appointment for a free consultation.

We hope this helps you understand the vital importance of healthy gut to your overall health and mental health!

Be well my friends.

Julie
